Is the Freelance an entrepreneur / entrepreneur?

It is often thought that being a Freelance is nothing more than a type of occupation. However, it is much more: it is to have a uni-personal company. Sometimes freelances even hire people for tasks that they can not encompass.

Working for oneself means having freedom in many things: where do I work? How much do I charge? When do I take my vacation? What type of client will I work for? However, these freedoms are also a source of much stress: where will I find clients? How much will I charge? What will I do if I have too much or if I do not have enough work?

The Freelance must have notions of accounting, management, advertising, marketing ... In the same way as an entrepreneur. However, there are essential differences between them:

The Freelance is specialized in a profession: designer, programmer, phonograph, etc. The profession of the entrepreneur is to manage and refer to themselves as "Entrepreneur in the restoration / internet / etc".

Generally, Freelances focus on one thing: they like things to be perfect, and often tend to procrastinate, that is, postpone things to make something more enjoyable. An entrepreneur loves to do thousands of things at once, and in fact, he has trouble concentrating on anything more than 15 minutes. They like to negotiate, fight with suppliers, convince customers and have less tendency to procrastinate.

When a freelancer says "he has done it" he means he has written it, programmed it, designed it ... When an entrepreneur says "he has done it" he means that he has paid people to do it.

Is a freelance always a freelancer? (in the case of Spain)

A Freelance is not always autonomous, although in most cases it is. Sometimes the Freelance has a job as an employee and only makes some projects in his free time. If the turnover is small and the tasks are very specific, one can simply register in the IAE and issue an invoice (for more information refer to this post).

Also some Freelances choose to create a company, alone or with several companies, in Spain or abroad, being in most cases dematerialized activities. For example, some choose to start a business in England.

Where does Freelance work?

There are mainly three options for Freelance: working from home, in a Coworking space or elsewhere. A recent study by Policybee.co.uk tells us that 60% of Freelancers work from home, followed by "with my clients", "another site" and finally in a Coworking space.

About the Freelance workplace

Contingent Employment work from home. The benefits are obvious at first glance: there is no need to move anywhere, it is cheap, and in most cases it is quiet. It is also great in case you have children. However, there are several drawbacks: it is difficult, almost impossible, to separate professional life from personal life, you are alone and you are always in the same place all week.

Coworking space. It's like a company's office, except you do not have to answer to a boss, and you do not have to put up with unpleasant co-workers. It also allows to generate synergies with other Freelances to improve how Freelance and maybe have more clients as well as how to talk with other people who work like you. Finally, it allows you to have a professional looking space to meet with clients. The disadvantages are mainly the price (more than 100 euros / month in most cases) and the fact of having to move to the Coworking space.

Other site. Being a freelancer provides the opportunity to work in more original places such as a park, a library where the work environment as well as the background noise can inspire you, a cafeteria like Starbucks or a more traditional cafeteria ... The options are unlimited.
