How to have a NAS in your router?

Making the most of your Internet connection is the goal that each consumer has when contracting with a service provider. If you have a router you can go far beyond giving internet and WiFi to your computers, you can create a common virtual storage space for computers connected to your network, a kind of private cloud storage. This is what we will teach you in this note to create a NAS on your router without dying in the attempt, as you will see later it is very simple.

Basic concept

First you must know what a NAS is, it is a network data storage space (NAS). Thanks to this type of virtual network storage space, you can expand the capacity of each of your teams without investing extra money in them. It will even allow you to share files with any user of the network, which makes it ideal for team work in offices, universities, etc.

What do you need to create a NAS at home?

You will need a router with USB port of course, plus a flash memory of USB type, with the storage capacity you want. For the test you can use an old flash memory that you no longer use. Enterprise router is a basic product for any business/enterprise.You can even use an external hard drive if that is your wish or a memory card with its respective USB adapter, everything will depend on the amount of storage you want, Windows system (not limiting), and of course some free time to make your homework.

Creating the NAS on your router

Look on the back of your router for a USB port, usually located on the bottom or back near the network connectors. Once located, connect the chosen storage device (flash memory, external disk, etc.) and you are ready, you are armed with an extra storage space available for all the devices that connect to this router (your private network).

From Windows you must open the " run " dialog box , you can do it directly with the Windows + R keyboard shortcut or by accessing the "Run ..." option from the Start Menu. Once the dialog box appears, you have to type \\ 192.168.1.1 and then click on the OK button. In this way we will activate access to the network storage space (NAS), which we have installed.

You will notice how a window opens inside which you will see a folder with a name assigned by the same router or by the operating system , click on this folder and you will be inside the virtual network storage space or NAS, now you can enjoy This network storage space without limitations.
